kab-pro
Time to pay some attention to the engine. Tearing the top end up for inspection / cleanup / piston replacement. So far everything looks in tact so let's clean it all up and make it look good. And since it's now looking good, it's ready for the next phase which I will post the next time
kab-pro
Brought the head to this weird office to do a little scanning. Lets not forget about the rocker arm. A critical component in determining exh. valve lift and duration. And now when the process is complete, it's time for some analysis on the improvement field. But since it's boring, I will only show off the CAD models... Here you go. Everything one needs to find out every detail of performance on the current setup. kab-pro
Heres the look on my ports as they are for this season. I will pay more attention to them next year.

kab-pro
The head is back at my desk, it's time to throw it together and reinstall. Valves looking all nice and shiny.
kab-pro
The intake runner was one of the areas that needed the most work. The factory trim is not very appealing to the naked eye, so here comes the remedy! This is definitely going to help. I have just done this on a SM610S and the difference is worth noting. It will now rev quicker and further.
Guest Connader
Dear Andis, hard to understand all changes done when you have no "before" pics. May I sum it up: 1. You reworked the ?? "Axis" of the TB to remove the upper part for better flow 2. You reworked the TB itself to get this ugly edge refined 3. You ground the part under the Injector for mor efficient spraying Did I got everything?? Can you please give some details about the stuff you did?? Great pioneer-work, again!! kab-pro
Moin, You got it all correctly, but not only did I cut off one of the bridges, I also sunk brand new tapered screws into the butterfly, cut them in the correct length so there are no ends looking into the channel cross section, and chamfered the sharp edges of the remaining axis bridge. I also did one more thing I didn't mention - the 100% open position in stock trim is more like 85 - 90% open. I fixed that too of course. The main idea behind the injector area ground was not more efficient spraying though. It was making the surface both smooth and with a rough finish to prevent droplets from sticking to the wall. So in summary, when looking into the runner, the cross sectional area is now both bigger and smoother.
Guest Connader
Great work Mate!! Yeah I've seen those tapered screws and the chamfered sharp edges. Too obvious to mention though!! Very interested to know how engine behaviour changed!?! I have to say: After all I read about the 13' CRF I really was annoyed if power was really too weak. But so far this turns out to be the most powerfull 450 I've ever ridden!! Don't know wether it's because it's power is more grunty and layed down the power-curve (which seems to be teriffic for Sumo) or the "new-times" bikes are even more powerfull then I know!?! Anyway: not missing anything yet!! (But nice to know how to get if, if needed!!) Cheers for that!!
kab-pro
Connader: The engine behavior changed notably enough. It will now pull longer and harder. The low revs are also better. Here's one more thing I would like to show to all of you. If you don't want to spend the 300+ euros for the HRC programmer kit, there might be an alternative way to map your bike cheap. Here's what I did. The pinout! How it all looks together! What you get! Just be sure you buy the right CD-rom for your model and happy programming!! Ben
So how did the riding go?
kab-pro
The riding was OK, too bad the weather was not. It is still pretty cold and windy. But nevertheless, I was able to feel the benefits of all the little tricks I did to the engine. It now feels a lot happier all around the power band and it will start almost instantly after the rebuild. I also tried to mess around with the FAOR settings a bit, unfortunately it was too cold to really get into the riding and notice an effect. The rear tire was struggling to get a good grip so hopefully I will be able to give a better review once this darn fridge lifts from the spring sky and takes the typhoon with it. It seems that our side project nick named "the wiener-machine" A.K.A. #282 has also succeeded. Flying like a BOSS. )
andi4eyes
That bigfoot DOES look cool! How is the handling compared to a regular SM setup?
kab-pro
The bigfoot actually handled surprisingly well. No problems keeping up with the regular SM setups whatsoever. The only notable difference was that it's a bit harder to throw it over from one turn to the other. Nevertheless, it sticks in turns and exits them with dignity, not to mention that it accelerates like a mad bi*ch. I would like to note that the suspension on this one was reworked to suit SM. kab-pro
Sure, everyone will agree. But the Sasquatch simply serves as a reminder that a good sumo riding experience can be obtained on a low budget build also.
